My response on Protandim vs Cellgevity – Which one stands out?

Is Protandim the top dog in the anti-aging supplement arena? The following quote appeared in my inbox so it was time to put pen to paper on my research in to it, glutathione and Nrf2 and lay out the fact you need to know to make a decision on how to best support your health and slow the aging process.

I used to be a Max distributor.  Am now distributing Protandim. Our medical advisor has shown that cysteine is not the rate limiting factor.

There are multiple steps in glutathione synthesis and more than one potential rate limiting factor.

You need both the substrates, ie cysteine, glutatmine and glycine, plus the two enzymes which create glutathione.

As you would probably know – this is from Wikipedia

  • First, gamma-glutamylcysteine (GGC) is synthesized from L-glutamate and cysteine via the enzyme gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase (a.k.a. glutamate cysteine ligase, GCL). This reaction is the rate-limiting step in glutathione synthesis.[4]
  • Second, glycine is added to the C-terminal of gamma-glutamylcysteine via the enzyme glutathione synthetase.

Looking at the first step which is the rate limiting one, you need both the enzyme and cysteine.

You can increase the levels of the GGC enzyme and it will optimise the synthesis of glutathione from the available cysteine, and yes it has been shown that inducing GGC via Nrf2 activation will increase glutathione levels.

However at some point as you increase the enzyme activity the availability of cysteine will become the rate limiting factor.

And the only way to break through this bottleneck is by supply cysteine inside the cell.  RiboCeine has been shown to the most effective and safe way to provide intra-cellular cysteine to boost glutathione levels.

Cellgevity contain it’s own blend of plant extracts, sulforaphane, curcumin and more, which are known in the research on pubmed.gov are as being the most studied and potent natural nrf2 activators.

The biggest reason why Protandim can’t compete with the Max products in supporting glutathione levels is because as glutathione detoxifies toxins, it binds to them and is excreted out of the body, lowering the body’s cysteine supply.

Without supplementing with Cysteine the initial boost in glutathione from increasing the enzymes can’t be maintained long term with the toxic load in the modern environment.
